SteelSeries Arctis GameBuds Return as a $199 Color Drop

Matcha and Yuzu Arctis GameBuds reuse the 2024 wireless design at $199.99, and the new firmware already reaches older pairs.

SteelSeries is selling its Arctis GameBuds Cozy Collection Matcha and Yuzu earbuds at $199.99, the same wireless buds it launched in October 2024. The tea-green and citrus shells are new. The 2.4GHz dongle, the 6mm drivers, and the charging case are not.

A 2026 firmware pass adds listen-before-talk channel picking and more transmit power, and that file is going to black, white, and Glorange pairs as well. The fall drop is a colorway, a higher North American list, and a second chance to sell a finished radio.

SteelSeries Sells the Same Buds as a Cozy Collection

On September 1, 2026, SteelSeries put Matcha and Yuzu on sale as a limited Cozy Collection, with Japan following on September 11 at ¥28,310 tax in. The company listed the Cozy Collection at $199.99 in North America, £159.99 in the United Kingdom, and €179.99 in EMEA. KontrolFreek joined with matching Matcha and Yuzu thumb grips at $12.99, or £10.99 and €13.99.

Matcha reads as powdered-tea green. Yuzu reads as a pale citrus yellow, named for the Asian fruit. Each bud carries a darker SteelSeries logo over the on-ear button, and the clamshell case and USB-C nano-dongle follow the same paint. The buds seat on magnets. The dongle locks into the lid through its USB-C port and ships already paired.

That is the product. Hands-on testers who ran Halo: Campaign Evolved, Call of Duty: Black Ops 7, and No Man’s Sky for a week were running 2024 hardware in new shells. SteelSeries framed the launch as a lifestyle drop, not a new chipset.

Creators who already own the original pair are using Matcha as a travel spare, which is the honest job of a colorway. A second set makes sense if you want the paint. It does not make sense if you expected a faster radio.

THE GAMEBUDS COLOR CALENDAR

  1. October 29, 2024: SteelSeries puts black and white Arctis GameBuds on sale at $159.99 in North America.
  2. May 13, 2025: An ultra-limited Glorange colorway goes up at the same $159.99 list, still without an Xbox pack.
  3. September 1, 2026: Matcha and Yuzu land as the Cozy Collection at $199.99, 22 months after the first sale.
  4. September 11, 2026: Japanese stores start selling both colors at ¥28,310 tax in.

The United Kingdom list did not move, holding at £159.99. The North American tag is the one that jumped, and the Cozy shells arrived already sitting on that higher sticker.

The Firmware Update Existing Owners Already Have

SteelSeries did ship a 2026 firmware file with the color news. It raises 2.4GHz output and adds listen-before-talk, which checks a channel before the buds transmit so the link can skip a crowded slice of spectrum. The company published firmware for every current GameBuds model, including pairs bought in 2024.

Updated 2026 firmware provides increased power for rock-solid connection and listen-before-talk (LBT) for improved channel selection to help bypass wireless interference. Now available for all GameBuds models.

SteelSeries, Cozy Collection launch note

If you already wear black or white buds, you are not locked out of that radio tweak. You are locked out of the green and yellow plastic. SteelSeries still claims the 2.4GHz path is more than seven times faster than Bluetooth, the same line it used at launch, and the buds still flip between the dongle and Bluetooth 5.3 with a triple tap.

Bluetooth remains a secondary radio. It is fine for a phone call or an audiobook. It is limited to the SBC codec, so it is not the path you want for a ranked match. The dongle is the product that makes these gaming buds instead of ordinary wireless earphones.

Which Color Works on Xbox?

SteelSeries still splits the line by platform on the box, and that split is the trap. The PlayStation pack talks to PS5, PC, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, phones, and a long list of USB-C handhelds. It does not talk to Xbox. The Xbox pack adds a PC/Xbox slider on the dongle and the extra wireless hardware Microsoft requires, and that is the pack that also works on PlayStation once the slider sits on PC.

Support docs now list Xbox versions only in Black, Matcha, and Yuzu. White and Glorange never got that slider. If you own more than one console, the Xbox Matcha or Yuzu set is the one that covers the shelf.

GAMEBUDS COLORS AND XBOX SUPPORT

Color First sale Xbox version
Black October 29, 2024 Yes
White October 29, 2024 No
Glorange May 13, 2025 No
Matcha September 1, 2026 Yes
Yuzu September 1, 2026 Yes

Hands-on checks with an Xbox-labelled dongle found the same pattern. Leave the slider on Xbox and a PlayStation 5, Switch, or Switch 2 stays silent. Flip it to PC and those consoles pick up the buds at once. The box copy is narrower than the hardware.

WHAT THE XBOX DONGLE ACTUALLY RUNS

  • Xbox Series: Native 2.4GHz with the slider set to Xbox, the reason this SKU exists.
  • PlayStation 5: Works once the same slider moves to PC, despite the Xbox branding on the pack.
  • Switch and Switch 2: Same PC-slider path, plug-and-play on USB-C.
  • PC, phones, handhelds: Dongle on USB-C or Bluetooth 5.3 with a triple tap to jump between them.

Buyers who grabbed white buds for a PlayStation desk and later added an Xbox have no in-color upgrade path. They would need Black, Matcha, or Yuzu. That is a support-page detail SteelSeries could have put on the front of the Cozy boxes.

They Stay Put for Four Hours Straight

Each bud weighs 5.3 grams and uses a stemless shell shaped from scans of 62,000 ears, with small, medium, and large silicone tips in the box. Fit is the whole game with in-ears. If the seal fails, bass, isolation, and noise cancelling all fall off, and the bud starts walking out when you talk.

A week of testing put them in for a little over four hours at a stretch with no hot spots and no creep. That is the comparison that matters against cheap phone buds that need a shove every call. Once seated, these stayed seated through campaign sessions and through voice chat.

IP55 dust and water resistance is the other quiet spec. It is enough for sweat and a wet walk, and it is a step up from the IPX4 rating on Sony’s INZONE Buds and Razer’s Hammerhead V3 HyperSpeed. You would not swim in them. You can commute in them without treating the case like glass.

More Than 200 Presets Live on Your Phone

The Arctis Companion app on iOS and Android is where the 2024 design still earns its keep. It finds the buds the same way SteelSeries software finds a Nova headset, then hands you mode switching, volume, mic level, transparency, and active noise cancelling. Matcha and Yuzu open the same menus. There is no hidden hardware behind the paint.

The equalizer list is the feature other $200 gaming buds still do not copy at this scale. The US store and a fresh hands-on both count more than 200 game-specific tunings, among them 007 First Light, Call of Duty: Black Ops 7, and League of Legends, and you can tap a new one without backing out of the match. Bluetooth and 2.4GHz can hold different curves, so the phone mix does not have to sound like the FPS mix.

WHAT THE APP ACTUALLY CHANGES

  • Radio toggle: Jump between Bluetooth and 2.4GHz without digging through console menus.
  • Noise slider: Move from transparency to hybrid 4-mic noise cancelling, or park it off to save battery.
  • Game EQ: Search a title and load a preset while the dongle keeps feeding the console.
  • Battery read: Check the buds and the case from the phone instead of guessing from a LED.

Custom parametric work still wants SteelSeries GG on a computer. The phone app is the live mixer. That split has been true since launch, and Cozy does not change it.

Over-Ear Heat Is the Problem These Buds Solve

The honest rival is not another earbud. It is a sweaty over-ear headset in a long ranked session. Testers who came from Nova-class cans kept the GameBuds in because the ears stayed dry and the 4-mic hybrid cancelling cut room noise enough to keep a firefight clean. Mic pickup stayed clear in those sessions. Isolation is only decent, not class-leading, so a loud café will still leak in.

SteelSeries rates the buds for up to 10 hours per charge and the case for another 30 hours, which is how it reaches a 40-hour total, with Qi wireless charging on the case. Independent lab tests from RTINGS, which still ranks these as the best gaming earbuds it has measured, list 8.25 hours of continuous playback with noise cancelling on. That gap is the ANC tax, not a broken battery claim.

ARCTIS GAMEBUDS ON PAPER

  • Drivers: 6mm neodymium, 20 Hz to 20 kHz, 5.3 grams per bud.
  • Battery: Up to 10 hours rated, 8.25 hours in lab tests with ANC on, 40 hours with the case.
  • Radios: 2.4GHz USB-C dongle plus Bluetooth 5.3, Quick-Switch by triple tap.
  • Build: IP55, 4-mic hybrid ANC, Qi and USB-C charging on the case.

Sony’s INZONE Buds, still listed around the same $199.99 launch tag, claim up to 12 hours in the buds and 24 hours with the case, and Sony quotes dongle latency as low as 30 milliseconds. They do not offer an Xbox path. Razer’s Hammerhead V3 HyperSpeed undercuts at $129.99 and covers PC, PS5, Switch, and Switch 2, with weaker cancelling in head-to-head notes. The GameBuds pitch is the Xbox SKU, the case endurance, and that preset library.

Matcha and Yuzu Open at a $40 Higher List

North America paid $159.99 for this radio in October 2024 and again for Glorange in May 2025. The Cozy pair opens at $199.99, a $40 higher list for the same drivers and the same dongle. Older black and white listings have also been restickered at that $199.99 MSRP, so the color drop arrived after the catalog price had already moved.

If you never owned GameBuds and you want small wireless cans that work on Xbox, PS5, Switch 2, and a phone, Matcha and Yuzu are the current way to buy that kit, and the Xbox color is the one that actually covers the living room. If you already own black or white, the 2026 firmware is the upgrade, and it does not require a second case. The new shells are for the person who wants the paint, or who wants a spare pair that looks like a fall drink instead of a headset.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do Arctis GameBuds Work on Xbox and PlayStation?

Only the Xbox-labelled packs include the dongle slider and the extra wireless hardware Xbox requires, so a PlayStation-boxed white or Glorange pair will not talk to an Xbox over 2.4GHz. An Xbox Matcha or Yuzu pair will talk to a PlayStation 5, a Switch, and a Switch 2 after you slide that switch to PC, which is why multi-console buyers should start with the Xbox SKU even if they main PlayStation.

How Long Do Arctis GameBuds Batteries Last on a Short Charge?

SteelSeries rates a 15-minute USB-C top-up at three hours of use, on top of the 10-hour full charge and the 40-hour total with the case. The case also takes Qi wireless charging, so it can sit on the same pad as a phone overnight without a cable in the lid.

Can Existing Arctis GameBuds Owners Get the 2026 Firmware?

Yes. Listen-before-talk and the higher 2.4GHz output are software on every current model, including Glorange, so a 2024 black pair is not frozen on the old radio. You do not need Matcha or Yuzu for that file.

What Is Different Between Matcha, Yuzu, and the Original GameBuds?

Paint, and which colors offer Xbox. Drivers, battery, ANC, and the nano-dongle match the 2024 launch, and the box still includes S, M, and L tips plus a USB-C to USB-A adapter for older ports. The Matcha and Yuzu KontrolFreek grips are sold separately at $12.99 if you want the controller to match the case.

Do Arctis GameBuds Work on Nintendo Switch 2?

They do, with the dongle in a USB-C port and, on an Xbox-labelled set, the slider on PC. Leave that slider on Xbox and the Switch 2 stays silent, which is the same behavior testers saw on Switch and PS5.
